Leo Zhao

Head of Energy Storage Trinasolar (APAC)

Leo is a seasoned professional with over 16 years of research and industrial experience in solar and energy storage. He currently serves as the Head of Energy Storage at Trinasolar, overseeing the company’s storage business in the APAC region (ex-China).

Before joining Trinasolar, Leo held the position of Director, Intelligent Renewables Lead at Univers (formerly Envision Digital). In this role, he led the renewable IoT business for APAC and was the product owner for energy storage and solar asset management and performance analytics software applications.

Leo’s earlier career also includes R&D experiences at the Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS) and the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he headed the PV System Technology group. He was responsible for PV System related research activities and spearheaded the world’s largest Floating PV testbed project. This project spurred wide interests in the technology and resulted in high impact publications, such as whitepapers with Word Bank and IFC. Prior to SERIS, Leo worked as a senior R&D engineer and project leader at DuPont.

Leo holds Master’s and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, and carried out solar cell research for his PhD work at imec Belgium.

His journey in the field of renewables began at a pivotal moment in the industry when the global cumulative installed solar capacity just reached 1GW, marking his deep-rooted commitment and passion for clean energy technologies since the early years of the industry.
