Peter Hulkenberg
Peter is a Chartered Professional Electrical Engineer with 25 years in power systems — the last 13 he spent designing, delivering and developing off-grid hybrid renewable power generation and grid-forming battery storage projects across remote Australia.
He began at KEMA in the Netherlands (now CESI) in high-voltage testing, certification and diagnostics, then moved to EDL Energy, where his project work included the award-winning Coober Pedy and Agnew Renewable Hybrid projects — Agnew the first Australian mine site powered at scale by wind, and one of the earliest large grid-forming microgrids in the resources sector.
In 2026 he founded Pelagion to offer that expertise as an independent subject matter expert and consultant: no vendor relationships, no equipment to sell, no position to protect.
His current preoccupation is the argument every islanded project has sooner or later — how to select the right generation equipment and how large the grid-forming fleet really needs to be, and which criterion is actually driving it: system strength, post-contingency reserve, or the largest motor start. He welcomes the challenge.
