Thomas Schmitz
Thomas Schmitz is General Manager, Energy Markets at Aquila Clean Energy Asia Pacific (APAC) where he is responsible for all energy market activity across APAC including PPA origination and market insights and revenue strategy. Thomas has over 24 years of experience in the energy sector, spanning renewable energy (wind, solar and BESS), energy commodities (natural gas, coal, carbon emissions, green credits), financial services, and energy derivatives trading and clearing. Thomas has lead teams of experts in Europe and APAC responsible for PPA origination, market analytics, spot and forward market trading, merchant risk management, regulatory affairs as well as commercial and government stakeholder management. As a member of executive committees and project steering committees, he has overseen the development, construction and operation of portfolios consisting of more than 5 GW of onshore wind farms and 4.5+GW (up to 8 hours) of Battery Energy Storage Systems (LFP & NAS) as well as the development, financial close and NTP of a 600MWp/1,600MWh BESS in Victoria, Australia in December 2023.
Additionally, he serves as a board member at the Centre for New Energy Transition Research, where he contributes to the research, training, and skills development in new energy generation, transmission, and storage. He holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Melbourne and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from The Australian National University.
